In a bid to tackle the burgeoning challenges posed by electric vehicle (EV) emergencies, Detroit’s finest came together with industry experts for an Innovation Workshop aimed squarely at first responders. It's crucial now, more than ever, with the surging popularity of EVs, to ensure those tasked with our safety are thoroughly trained and prepped to handle lithium-ion battery hazards with the utmost skill.

At the helm of this initiative stands John Waters, a man whose history with EV batteries can be traced back to the first mass-produced offerings with GM’s EV1. Not only has he amassed several patents in the field, but he has also been swiftly adapting first responder strategies for the EV era. Waters, who began his work in Detroit, notes the imperatives of evolving safety techniques in step with our technological advancements, according to the City of Detroit.

The workshop was not just a place for demonstrations but a crucible for collaboration. Energy Safety Storage Products International (ESSPI), recipient of US Department of Transportation funding, led the charge in fire management solutions. The company's CEO, Ronald Butler, brings a wealth of experience as a former Detroit Firefighter. "It was an outstanding event that firefighters needed," Butler told the City of Detroit. "They needed training in understanding of and response to electric vehicle battery fires and we delivered."
