The Detroit Zoo has swung open the virtual gates to a future where goats might bridge the gap between humans and conservation. A new project, aptly named Discovery Trails, is staking out its territory over a seven-acre plot that will showcase animals and education alike, aiming for a grand opening in 2026. According to a report from ClickOnDetroit, the zoo has plans to incorporate a 14-foot-high canopy trail, accessibility features, and a pavilion for stingrays and bamboo sharks.
Dr. Hayley Murphy, CEO and Executive Director of The Detroit Zoological Society, shared a palpable enthusiasm for the initiative, stressing the importance of connecting children with nature. She told ClickOnDetroit, “This is a real effort at emersion and nature connecting kids to animals.” In an effort to draw people closer to the animal kingdom, children will also have the chance to partake in a farmer's market and pet critters in a dedicated barnyard, mentioned Murphy in the information provided by Detroit Free Press.
With a $20 million price tag hanging from its proverbial neck, Discovery Trails aims to bolster economic impact substantially. Funded through donors and grants, the zoo forecasts a punchy $185 million annual regional economic uptick. The anticipation also includes burgeoning visitation and membership numbers by 12% and 11% respectively, alongside an additional 13,000 children pouring into the zoo through expanded school trip offerings. These statistics were highlighted by the Metro Times coverage of the announcement.
The zoo's living roster will welcome alpacas, miniature donkeys, and the not as cuddly but equally fascinating bamboo sharks, bush dogs, and burrowing owls. Dr. Murphy pointed out the intention behind these selections, according to Detroit Free Press, “We also look at what animals might need our conservation work, and we look at what animals might connect to people.” In addition to offering heartfelt face-to-face encounters, the project promises a buffet of educational experiences tailored to young minds and those young at heart.
Interested parties can wrangle further details and sneak peeks into the evolution of this project at the zoo's website, as construction fences rise and the future canopy reaches skyward.
