The Detroit Zoo is in a period of leonine transition, bidding a fond farewell to one lion while bracing to heartily welcome another. Binti, the first lion cub born at the Detroit Zoo in over four decades, is on the verge to be relocated to an undisclosed zoo. This move, according to zoo officials, is in alignment with the Species Survival Plan (SSP) which seamlessly aims to maintain lion populations in zoos as healthy and genetically diverse. The Zoo's bitter-sweet goodbye was captured in a statement that "Saying goodbye is always bittersweet – especially for an animal that has such a special bond with our animal care staff," obtained by ClickOnDetroit.
Binti, now four years old, was birthed by resident lions Simba and Asha on September 10, 2020. Due to post-labor complications, Binti required hand-rearing by the zookeepers, who have subsequently fostered her into a healthy and well-socialized lion. Meanwhile, the Zoo has signaled their eagerness to soon introduce a new male lion into the pride, which will include lions Asha and Amirah. The logistics of this new lion’s arrival are yet to be revealed, promising eagerly-awaited updates on the Detroit Zoo's social media channels. Further details about this upcoming addition to the Detroit animal family were teased, with the zoo stating, “Though she will be missed at the Detroit Zoo, we’re excited for all that awaits Binti in this next adventure,” as per ClickOnDetroit report.
The zoo’s shifting dynamics don't merely represent a change of guard but also embody the broader zoo community's commitment to conservation. An SSP recommendation, which was facilitated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), underscores the seriousness with which such animal transfers are undertaken. Demonstrating the zoo's foresight and investment in their lions' future, staff remarked via Facebook, "We’re hopeful that one day Binti will contribute to the conservation of her species by becoming a mother herself," as noted by MLive. This departure coincides with Simba's earlier move this year to the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota, also under the SSP.
The upcoming arrival of the new male lion promises to newly invigorate the genetic pool and vitality of the pride at Detroit Zoo. "The zoo said that while they are saying goodbye to Binti, they will welcome a new lion to join Asha and Amirah soon," according to a statement from WXYZ.
