Residents of East Central ISD, a district that sprawls across southeast Bexar County, are watching their open spaces quickly convert into subdivisions and bracing for a surge in student population. With enrollment projections soaring from the current 11,920 students to an anticipated 25,617 by the 2033-2034 school year, the district is seeking additional funds to accommodate this explosive growth. According to a study done by Population and Survey Analysts, the number of housing units will burgeon by nearly 44,600 by October 2033, as per Our Lady of the Assumption Parish

Seeking to get ahead of this unprecedented expansion, East Central ISD is asking voters to approve a $331.1 million bond package. Under Proposition B, the funds will be allocated for the construction of a second high school at $198.9 million and two elementary schools at $50.6 million and $49.7 million, respectively. East Central ISD spokesman Brandon Oliver highlighted the urgent need for new facilities, stating, "We listen to our community,” he said. “I mean, they wanted a new high school, but according to demographers, we would reach 120% occupancy of the elementary schools first," told KSAT. The bond would also cover the costs of land purchases for future campus developments.

This round of funding follows a 2022 bond approval where voters greenlit a $240 million package that included new school constructions. Yet, as enrollment continues to climb, Oliver expressed that additional space could still be necessary down the road, saying, "It's supposed to take care of the expected growth. But, you know, as we continue, we might, after reviewing the facilities, need additional space," as reported by KSAT.

The bond propositions extend beyond just educational facilities. Propositions C and D seek to enhance athletic infrastructure, with Prop C allocating $10 million for renovations to East Central High School’s Hornet Stadium, and Prop D earmarking $18.9 million for baseball, softball, and tennis facility upgrades. Part of the package, Proposition A, will validate a new higher tax rate to fund increased teacher salaries, additional police officers, and updated security measures, with an overall budget increase of $6.6 million. Oliver had previously explained the holistic approach to development stating "according to demographers, we would reach 120% occupancy of the elementary schools first. So the first need was to address that and also give us a third high school to reduce that congestion," according to a statement obtained by Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. If all four propositions pass, ECISD homeowners can anticipate an increase of $378 on average in property taxes per year to support these vital community investments.
