The long-planned H Mart on Burnet Road is finally hard to miss. Construction crews are active and fresh "coming soon" signs are now up at North Loop Plaza, signaling real movement at 5222 Burnet Road. After months of filings and quiet prep work, Austin's second H Mart is visibly taking shape, promising North Central shoppers a closer option for Asian groceries and a future food-hall-style destination.
Signage Up, Crews On Site
Reporter Kelsey Thompson with MySA visited the Burnet Road site on March 27 and spotted construction crews at work while new "coming soon" lettering went onto the storefront marquee and the shopping center directory. The visit captured some of the first obvious signs of progress after a long stretch dominated by permit activity and planning. MySA also noted that H Mart has not yet committed to a specific opening date.
Filings Outline Remodel And Timeline
Project paperwork filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation describes the Burnet Road job as a 23,125-square-foot interior remodel with an estimated price tag of $4,000,000. The project was registered in August 2023 and the filing lists a target completion date of May 31, 2026. The record identifies H Mart as the tenant for Unit 600 at the property. With the company staying quiet on firm dates, those state filings remain the clearest public guide to timing.
H Mart In Austin: From Lakeline To Burnet
H Mart first arrived in Central Texas in February 2018 with its store at 11301 Lakeline Boulevard, which debuted with an in-store Market Eatery food court concept. Eater Austin covered that grand opening, and local outlets later reported on the chain's plans for a second Austin location. In 2023, Community Impact reported that H Mart had leased space at 5222 Burnet Road, setting the stage for the expansion now visible from the street.
San Antonio Keeps Asking, H Mart Keeps Waiting
Company officials told MySA in late November that they "do receive a high volume of inquiries and enthusiasm from the San Antonio community," but said that finding the right site can be a lengthy process and that there are no active projects in that city. For now, that means San Antonio fans are still in wait-and-see mode while Austin moves toward a second store. MySA also pointed out that Texas already has several H Mart locations in the Austin, Dallas and Houston metropolitan areas.
What Comes Next On Burnet
In the near term, watchers can look for a wave of final permits, interior build-out notices and city inspection postings. Based on the TDLR filing, the May 31, 2026 completion date would line up with an official opening later this spring if inspections and finish work stay on track. Typically, local hiring notices and a formal H Mart "coming soon" announcement follow the appearance of exterior signage and active interior work. We reached out to H Mart for comment and will update this report if the company shares an opening timeline.
