In a bid to aid Socorro residents overwhelmed by the red flour beetle infestation, El Paso County has committed $25,000 to provide free pesticides to help protect homes in the area. As reported by El Paso Times, the El Paso County Commissioners Court took this action following three months of complaints from locals about the invasive pests.
Those looking to get their hands on the pesticide can do so today at the Ysleta Annex, a move that precedes the transfer of pecan shells, the speculated source of the recent beetle surge, from residential areas in Socorro to the County landfill starting Monday, October 28th, this transition could temporarily ratchet up beetle activity, prompting added urgency to the county's response. As KFOX-TV quotes El Paso County Commissioner Ilana Holguin, "We’re going to see more beetles kind of come up into the air as the pecan shells are being moved," highlighting the proactive steps taken after around 500 distress calls were made to local authorities over the beetle issue.
El Paso Water has been tasked with transporting the pecan shells to the landfill, a process that residents are advised to brace themselves for, as it's expected to agitate and potentially increase the number of beetles. Residents are encouraged to utilize the pesticides provided by the county to minimize the intrusion of these pests into their homes. As stated by KVIA, this operation is slated to begin on the 28th of October, suggesting a critical preparation window for those directly affected.
Volunteers looking to assist with the pesticide distribution are being summoned via email at [email protected], a call-to-action that emphasizes the collaborative effort required to manage this infestation. The county's allocation of resources and the community's orchestrated response embody the collective endeavor to restore normalcy amid the pest-disrupted peace of Socorro's households, a sentiment echoed in the county's approach as per the information conveyed above.
