A deadly fire erupted in a Southfield high-rise apartment complex last Saturday, resulting in the tragic loss of a woman in her 70s. Firefighters received a call at about 5 a.m. from a neighbor who heard a smoke detector alarm in the apartment building located on Civic Center Drive at Berg Road, as reported by WWJ Newsradio 950.
Upon arrival, fire crews quickly addressed the flames on the fourth floor, where, the unfortunate discovery was made. The victim was found unresponsive by the Southfield Fire Department and despite the prompt delivery of advanced lifesaving procedures, she was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The swift notification by neighbors and first responders was a testament to the efficacy of the building's safety measures, including a working smoke detector and sprinkler system, an essential line of defense that prevented the spread of the inferno to adjoining units, as ClickOnDetroit reported.
The Southfield Fire Chief Johnny Menifee reflected on the gravity of the situation stating, "Today, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased victim," and further highlighted the critical role that safety installations play within residential spaces, "This tragedy accentuates the importance of always having working smoke detectors in all dwellings and sprinkler suppression systems in large living spaces," as documented by The Detroit News.
All five stations of Southfield's fire department were deployed to manage the blaze, which the overhead sprinkler system had kept at bay, preventing additional casualties or damage. The name of the deceased has not been released, and, the cause of the fire is still under investigation by authorities. "I applaud the quick action of neighbors and our firefighters for their consummate professionalism and bravery," Menifee told The Detroit News.
