An incident at an early voting center in Bexar County resulted in the assault of an election official. The occurrence was confirmed by Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen during a briefing today. The assault took place at Johnston Branch Library, one of the 51 designated early voting locations. Details surrounding what exactly led to the violent act have been withheld, with the elections administrator citing an ongoing investigation, as reported by KSAT.
The event unfolded yesterday evening with the clerk promptly receiving care from Emergency Medical Services before being released. As per the numbers from the Bexar County elections office, 896 ballots were indeed cast at the site on that day, with the poll remaining open for voting today. Since the commencement of early voting on Monday, there has been a significant voter turnout with over 191,000 votes tallied in Bexar County to date.
In a further statement obtained by KENS 5, Callanen expressed her regret over having to report such an incident, emphasizing that the worker is recovering well. She also highlighted that voter turnout has been reaching new heights each day since the start of the early voting period. This influx of voters has brought with it not just numbers, but also frustration and discontent among those in line, punctuated by the incident yesterday. Authorities have reportedly stepped up security following the assault to ensure safety at the polling sites.
Callanen requested voters to maintain decorum at the polls. "Calm down, go to the polls, be prepared, do your homework," she urged. According to Callanen, there has been a noticeable tension between voters and poll workers, as long lines have been reported at nearly every early voting location. The elections administrator applauded the officials who she believes are doing a "fantastic job" under the circumstances. Registered voters in Bexar County are allowed to vote at any polling site during the early voting period, which will conclude next Friday, ahead of Election Day on November 5, as KEN 5 reported.
