Last Wednesday, tensions escalated at the Escondido Transit Center when an officer-involved shooting left one man wounded and prompted a detailed investigation. Escondido Police were called to the scene at approximately 7:38 p.m. after receiving reports of a man brandishing a gun. Upon arrival, officers spotted a suspect, soon identified as 34-year-old Antonio Rosales, who fled on foot, leading police on a pursuit that would end in gunfire.
According to a statement reported by the City of San Diego's official website, the chase came to a halt on a bike path when Rosales turned toward officers with what appeared to be a firearm in hand. In response, Officer Corey Montross, a three-year veteran of the force, opened fire, striking Rosales and incapacitating him. It was later determined that the suspect had a revolver-style BB gun.
The shooting is now undergoing rigorous scrutiny by multiple agencies. The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit, as explained by Hoodline, has taken the reins in the investigation by the countywide protocol for officer-involved shootings. This ensures a standardized procedure that maintains the integrity and fairness of the investigative process.
Rosales, who remains hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, was charged with a felony count of resisting arrest and brandishing a weapon. Details surrounding his arraignment have yet to be released.
