Today, a major explosion rockled a propane production facility in Waller County, drawing emergency responders to the scene, according to the Waller County Sheriff's Office. The incident, which happened at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the RapidXchange Production Facility located on FM 529 in Brookshire, sent plumes of smoke into the sky that were visible on Houston Transtar cameras from the Katy Freeway, as KHOU reported.
The ABC13 later updated the situation, confirming that at least one person was injured in the explosion that led to a large-scale fire. Multiple explosions were said to have occurred at the facility, resulting in an extensive emergency services response. Roads in the vicinity, including FM 2855, and FM 529 were closed as firefighters tackled the blaze in the 30300 block of FM. The authorities have recommended that residents keep clear of the area. The cause of the explosions has yet to be determined.
Air 11 video footage showed a scene of widespread destruction at the facility; with hundreds of propane tanks ablaze and fires in the surrounding grass fields. The immediate impact of the blast stretched beyond the confines of the facility itself, indicating the sheer force of the event. Given the volatility and the high risk associated with propane, the fire department's response was swiftly mobilized to contain the danger.
While the aftermath of the explosions and the subsequent blaze is still unfolding, the primary concern has been the safety of those within, and surrounding the facility. Residents have been continuously advised to steer clear of the area to allow emergency crews to do their work unimpeded.
