Tragedy struck the Platt Bridge this morning when a three-vehicle collision resulted in the death of one individual and disrupted the flow of traffic in South Philadelphia. The fatal accident, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m., involved a BMW, Nissan, and Toyota Camry, with the driver of the Toyota losing their life as reported by 6abc Action News. The incident forced authorities to close both lanes of the bridge, a key conduit connecting the city with Philadelphia International Airport, for several hours.
According to NBC Philadelphia, emergency services worked at the scene where one person was reportedly trapped, and another sustained minor injuries. After having closed for investigation and clearing operations, the eastbound lanes of the bridge were reopened around 7:30 a.m., while one westbound lane had also reopened, allowing the trapped traffic to move past the site of the accident gradually.
Traffic updates suggested alternate routes for drivers planning to traverse the area. While initially drivers were directed to use the Girard Point Bridge (Interstate 95) as an alternative route, as per NBC Philadelphia.
