Residents of Chanhassen may notice increased activity in their neighborhoods as Comcast and Metronet contractors lay the groundwork for a future with faster fiber-optic internet. It's infrastructure week every week in this suburban sprawl, where the hum of machinery punctuates the community’s usual tranquility. These installations are happening within the public right-of-way (ROW) and drainage and utility easement (D&U), as reported by the City of Chanhassen, Minnesota.
In practice, this means that up to 15 feet from the curb—sometimes a strip right through what homeowners might call their lawn—is set aside for communal use. With these easements, the city holds the power to lay the foundations of modern utility infrastructure, essential for services like the internet that are progressively becoming as basic a need as water and power. According to an announcement from the Chanhassen government, the easement rights are elaborate, permitting the installation of fiber-optic lines that trail along the front, back, and sides of a resident's domain, often ranging from 5-10 feet within property lines.
