Fife commuters can expect a smoother drive now that the paving project at the Interstate 5/54th Avenue East interchange is complete. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and its contractors finished the project, including final lane markings earlier this month, as reported by a Washington State Department of Transportation press release.
The Washington State Department of Transportation reports that the new pavement was completed quickly after closing the overpass for one weekend in September. During the closure, contractors removed the damaged surface and replaced it with new asphalt, fixing the issues that troubled drivers.
This project benefits not only current travelers but also helps ensure the interchange's longevity, reducing the need for frequent emergency repairs. It was part of a larger effort to maintain and enhance Washington highways, funded by the supplemental transportation budget approved by the Legislature earlier this year. It is one of 11 highway preservation projects scheduled for 2024.
