The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a special weather statement this morning for an area spanning multiple counties across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, citing an "increased risk of fire spread through this afternoon." The warning, issued while Philadelphia experiences a sunny day with temperatures expected to be around 70 degrees, is based on the combination of low humidity, gusty winds, and a recent lack of rainfall, according to the NWS.
The National Weather Service reports that relative humidity levels are expected to fall to 20% to 25%, with north to northeast winds blowing steadily at 10 to 15 mph. Intermittent gusts may reach up to 20 mph, especially as temperatures peak in the mid-60s to 70s. The strong sunlight contributes to the risk of fire spread under these dry conditions.
Given the circumstances, officials have strongly advised against any outdoor burning activities. The National Weather Service cautioned, "Be sure to properly extinguish or dispose of any potential ignition sources, including smoking materials such as cigarette butts." They also recommend staying updated on local burn restrictions by consulting state forest fire management agencies.
The forecast predicts sunny days ahead, along with a warning about ongoing dry conditions. Although winds are expected to calm over the weekend, low humidity continues to create a fire-prone environment. The NWS advises residents to remain vigilant and follow burn restrictions, with nighttime lows expected to be in the mid-40s.
