In the early hours of Monday morning, a group of five juveniles executed a bold smash-and-grab at a Tumwater cannabis dispensary, only to find themselves in police custody soon after. The Chehalis Tribal Police responded to the break-in after the suspects had rammed a car into the shop, grabbed merchandise, and then made a hasty retreat in a second vehicle, as reported by KIRO 7.
It was members of the Thurston County Sheriff's Office who located the getaway vehicle and engaged in a chase within the Tumwater city limits. According to KOMO News, Sheriff Derek Sanders stated, "A pursuit was initiated under new law, which now allows TCSO to pursue for burglary." The chase concluded with the suspects' vehicle careening into a pond, from which one suspect immediately surrendered while the remaining four scattered.
The foot pursuit that followed was a joint effort including Tumwater Police, Olympia Police deploying a drone, and the K9 unit. "One occupant surrendered, and the other four occupants fled in different directions. With the help of K9 Mac, Tumwater Police, and a drone from Olympia Police, all five suspects were captured and arrested,” Sanders articulated, as The Olympian reported. The identity of the suspects remains under wraps due to their juvenile status, but it has been disclosed that they hail from Pierce County and both vehicles used in the burglary were reported stolen.
The updated legislation allowing pursuits for burglary cases could suggest an increase in law enforcement's capacity to respond to similar crimes in the future. Sanders detailed the collaboration that led to the swift apprehension of the juveniles, illustrating the effectiveness of multi-agency cooperation. The suspects now await legal proceedings.
