An unsettling incident unfolded at Rocky River High School in Charlotte where eleven students found themselves doused in a flammable concoction amid a cafeteria brawl. One student was taken to the hospital, while several others sought medical attention following the encounter, with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) confirming an investigation into the altercation is underway and discipline for those violating school policy is imminent, according to WBTV.
As the community grapples with the shock, a mother, Diesha Hawkins, recounted her horror upon learning two of her daughters were center-stage in the violent splash, expressing her concerns, she said, “The other girl, came up and just tried to pour the opened-up bottle, and, I guess, poured it on them," in an interview with WCNC Charlotte; the mother's alarm is echoed in calls for heightened school security, akin to airport measures, to prevent such materials from endangering students.
Details about the liquid—said to be a mix of gasoline, bleach, and urine—have raised questions about campus security and parental responsibility in the home and CMS has urged families to have dialogues with their children about maintaining decorum and adhering to the Code of Student Conduct, as reported by WSOCTV. This guidance follows an incident where a student suffered eye injuries requiring specialist care.
"My daughter got the brunt. She had to get her eyes flushed out. She is traumatized. My other daughter just got it in her hair," Hawkins relayed the terrifying ordeal to WSOCTV, her voice laced with anxiety over the possibility of her daughter suffering vision loss and with a potent call to action: "The kids have no empathy, no morals, and no respect," she said.
