Prosecutors in the state of Florida are seeking the death penalty for Tyshael Elise Martin, a Montverde woman who faces charges for the murder of her boyfriend's 9-year-old daughter. As reported by ClickOrlando, Martin was arrested in August on murder and child abuse charges after the child, Jamaria Sessions, was found dead in June, displaying injuries consistent with physical abuse.
According to new court filings cited by ClickOrlando, a notice of intent filed earlier this month indicates Martin would face the death penalty if found guilty of first-degree murder. The Assistant State Attorney, Thomas Wieczorek, outlined five aggravating factors to warrant the death penalty, which include the homicide being especially heinous and the victim being under 12 years old and vulnerable due to Martin's position of custodial authority. The severity of the abuse was detailed by video evidence showing Martin commanding a Rottweiler to attack Jamaria Sessions and later beating her.
Both Martin and the girl's father, Lojuan Sessions, are currently being held without bond in Lake County Jail. Lojuan Sessions was arrested on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and is faced with his own set of legal challenges. ClickOrlando reported that the video footage from the family's security system revealed a traumatizing scene where Jamaria was "viciously attacked by the family’s 103-pound Rottweiler" and then physically assaulted by Martin.
Adding to the distress of this case, Jamaria lived with her maternal grandmother, Althea Chenault, after her mother died from congestive heart failure. Chenault expressed shock over Sessions taking the girls from school in October 2023 without permission and her ongoing fight for custody of Jaliah, the surviving sister now staying with another family member. Events are laid out plainly in the indictments and the courtroom, where Martin recently "pleaded not guilty to the crimes she is accused of," as Inside Lake detailed.
