Former Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton is joining ESPN's debate show "First Take." He'll make his debut this Friday, live from Tennessee State University, bringing his energetic style from the field to the debate stage with Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim. "Cam Newton’s addition to First Take brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities," David Roberts, ESPN executive, according to WCNC and WBTV.
Making a name in media with his podcast "4th & 1 With Cam Newton," the former quarterback has already proven he has the chops for engaging audiences off the field. Having amassed over 1.51 million YouTube subscribers, Newton claims the title of the "largest YouTuber in NFL history." His podcast covers pop culture, professional sports, and personal recollections from his playing days – topics he'll likely touch upon in his new role. ESPN envisages his dynamic charisma to create television that's compelling and a must-watch, according to WBTV.
"Fans can expect the same intensity I brought to the field, along with real talk, bold takes and good fun," Newton told WCNC. His move to television follows other Panther greats such as Greg Olsen and Luke Kuechly, who have also ventured into media roles post their playing careers. While Olsen has earned two Sports Emmys and Kuechly has taken a seat in the Panthers' radio broadcast booth and will commentate on select college football games for CBS Sports Network this season.
Newton's move into broadcasting is the latest transition for the athlete, given that he last played in the NFL in 2021 and is known for setting franchise records with the Panthers for passing yards, and touchdowns, and ranks as the third in yards. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, his foray into this arena seems a natural progression for the quarterback, whose presence on his podcast suggested a seamless fit for television.
