The City of Fort Collins has struck gold, but not the kind you mine. Instead, their Multicultural Business and Entrepreneur Center (MBEC) just snagged a 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), putting Fort Collins on the map for fostering local economic growth and cultivating a supportive environment for entrepreneurs. This isn't just a pat on the back, it's a recognition of the city's hard work to help small businesses and entrepreneurs flourish in a competitive market. The accolade singles out the MBEC's efforts in the Entrepreneurial & Small Business Development category, impacting a demographic of 25,000-200,000 residents.
The MBEC has built a reputation as a place where culture and commerce meet, offering free bilingual services in English and Spanish and making it a cinch for enterprising individuals to navigate the often complex maze of business services, licensing, permits, and regulatory requirements. But it's more than just a resource center, it serves as a lifeline for budding enterprises in Fort Collins, providing specialized training and support designed to help them grow and thrive. Acknowledging the collective push behind this initiative, SeonAh Kendall, Economic Health Office director said, as per the City of Fort Collins, "It’s an incredible honor to see the Multicultural Business and Entrepreneur Center recognized at this level. Our work is deeply collaborative, and this recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of all our partners across Northern Colorado."
Recognition from an organization like the IEDC, which commands a wealth of more than 4,300 members, doesn't come lightly. Each year, they scout for economic development entities that have not only achieved impressive results but have also advanced the practice of the profession itself. Kevin Kramer, chair of IEDC’s Excellence in Economic Development Awards Advisory Committee was effusive in recognizing MBEC's standout achievements, "We are absolutely thrilled to announce this year's award winners," Kramer said, as obtained by the City of Fort Collins, "These exceptional projects showcase remarkable dedication, and ingenuity within the field."
Fort Collins Economic Health Office (EHO) has much to celebrate, as it's clear that its initiatives are orchestrating a crescendo of economic diversity and inclusivity. The MBEC exemplifies the city's broader enthusiasm for economic health, striving to retain local businesses, and empowering them through accessible resources and expertise to build a robust local economy. This is about more than awards, it's about shaping a landscape where community and entrepreneurship are harmonious, and ultimately, where every resident has the opportunity to achieve their version of the American Dream.
