This isn't the first time this exact patch of I-25 has made headlines for the wrong reasons. In May, a wrong-way driver traveling in the HOV lane collided with another vehicle at the same location near 20th Street, killing one driver and seriously injuring another, according to CBS News. That crash underscored how this stretch of downtown freeway, where express and HOV lanes merge with heavy northbound and southbound traffic, has become a recurring flashpoint for severe collisions.

Monday's crash lands amid a grim stretch for Denver traffic safety. The city recorded 93 traffic deaths in 2025, its highest annual death toll on the dashboard since records began in 2013, Axios reported in January.
