Fort Collins Police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred early Saturday morning near South College Avenue and Triangle Drive. According to the City of Fort Collins, officers received an automated 911 call just after 5 a.m. from a cellphone at the crash site. They discovered a Nissan Pathfinder that had veered off the road into a natural area east of the avenue, with an adult female found deceased at the wheel.
The preliminary investigation, as stated in the news release, indicates the Pathfinder was heading south on South College Avenue before it hit the center median, crossed into the opposing traffic lanes, and crashed into a guardrail. After colliding with a group of trees, the vehicle stopped in a ravine. While processing the scene, which led to the closure of College Ave for several hours, officials are probing into factors such as whether alcohol or excessive speed may have played a role in the crash.
"This is a tragic incident, and our officers remain committed to thoroughly investigating the circumstances of the crash," said Sgt. David Lindsay, overseeing the CRASH team, as obtained by the City of Fort Collins. The team specializes in Collision Reconstruction And Scene Handling and has taken the helm of the ongoing investigation.

The identity of the woman, along with the exact cause and manner of her demise, will be announced by the Larimer County Coroner following family notification and further examination.
