Heads up, King Field denizens, CenterPoint Energy, and their contractor, Michel's Corporation, have kicked off the installation of a new natural gas main, and you're going to want to plan around the disruptions. The construction, which began early this week underneath the north sidewalk of 36th Street W between Pleasant Avenue S and Nicollet Avenue S, is set to continue through the end of the month, with a quick follow-up of service work and then restoration a few weeks later.
Parking won't be an option on either side of this stretch of 36th Street W, and if you're accustomed to strolling down the north sidewalk, you're out of luck—it's shut down as well, but here's a bit of silver lining on Oct. 16 the road was closed to southbound traffic at the Blaisdell Avenue S intersection and those looking for street parking will have to avoid the east side of Blaisdell Avenue S too, no significant disruption without a nearby detour though; exits are signposted at Nicollet Avenue S and 38th Street W.
Don't get too cozy with the current setup—starting Oct. 17, crews will move their operation over to the north sidewalk of 38th Street W from Pleasant Avenue S to Pillsbury Avenue S. This means more no-go zones for parking on both sides and another sidewalk closure, but fear not this part of the project is expected to be a quick one, wrapping up early in the week of Oct. 21, with any loose ends being tied up in the ensuing weeks.
But wait, there's more—the construction caravan rolls on in the week of Oct. 21 to the west sidewalk of Stevens Avenue S between 37th Street E and 38th Street E, say goodbye to parking on the west side and hello to a makeshift walking path on the east, while the construction team does its thing, they expect to be done by the week of Oct. 28, with the following acts of service work and subsequent restoration bringing down the curtain a few weeks thereafter.
