Despite the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Helene, Georgia officials announced elections will run according to schedule. Speaking from the Georgia State Capitol, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger emphasized the value of each vote, stating, "Every vote matters, because every voter matters," as reported in Savannah Now. Raffensperger reassured residents that the integrity of the upcoming elections would remain intact.
Efforts to maintain election timeliness press on, even as some local election offices grapple with disruptions. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, most county election offices were spared from severe damage. However, a few in storm-impacted regions contend with power and internet outages. Nevertheless, only a few polling locations in counties such as Lowndes, Richmond, and Columbia will need to be relocated.
State officials have taken concrete actions to prevent delay. Georgia Elections Director Blake Evans expressed appreciation for the hard work of county election officials, ensuring "everything stays on schedule with the election calendar," in a statement obtained by Savannah Now. The Secretary of State's office, working closely with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), prioritizes restoring services to affected areas.
According to Chief Operating Officer Gabe Sterling, the ethos for this year's elections hinges on transparency and efficiency. Sterling told Savannah Now, "There have been some requests from some quarters that we need to extend deadlines. So far, we've seen no need to do that, which is a good thing." Despite the storm, the impact to offices and voting equipment was minimal and will not impede the election process. Of the state’s 2,400 in-person polling places, only three experienced damage severe enough to warrant relocation.
Important dates, including voter registration and the start of early voting, remain as previously scheduled. The Secretary of State's office initiated the mailing of absentee ballots today, as mentioned in FOX 5 Atlanta. For those in affected areas, resources and updates are available through the Secretary of State's disaster recovery page and My Voter Page on their website to guarantee their participation in the democratic process.
