As the calendar flips to October, Gilbert has joined the collective mission to shine a spotlight on an often-veiled societal blight—domestic violence. The local Town Council has officially embraced this cause by making a public commitment to boost awareness during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), as reported by the Town of Gilbert's official website. This year's greater theme, "Hold, Heal, and Center," focuses on rooting out oppression and bolstering the marginalized to staunch the bleeding of its impacts on community life.
The issue at hand is not one shrouded in statistical ambiguity but starkly outlined in distress calls—over 1,800 domestic violence reports filed with the Gilbert Police just last year. The Family Violence Unit (FVU) here, comprised of ardently trained detectives and a sergeant, is steadfast in its pursuit to radically decrease these troubling figures in our community. Their specialized training in forensic interviewing and strangulation investigation is positioned to effectively respond to the unique dynamics of family assaults, as stated in Gilbert's news post.
Beyond immediate physical harm, the FVU extends its protective mantle to cover child and elder abuse, coordinating closely with the Department of Child Safety and Adult Protective Services. Gilbert's PD doesn’t let the transition from crisis to recovery for victims be a lonely voyage, offering a team of victim advocates to shepherd those harmed through the labyrinth of the criminal justice system.
A series of events, including a DVAM Donation Drive and a Wear Purple Day, are slated for locals to visibly and materially throw their weight behind this cause. An awareness event is also in the pipeline, presented as an opportunity for community members to gather and absorb tangible resources and information, as observed in Gilbert's news announcement.
