In response to critical fire weather conditions in parts of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster proclamation for several counties. Fires that started yesterday are posing serious threats to life and property, according to the Office of the Texas Governor website.
Several counties, including major areas like Harris, Travis, and Bexar, are included in this proclamation. The situation has become serious enough that regular state business procedures are being suspended to reduce the disaster's impact. Governor Abbott, using powers from Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, has declared this emergency and authorized the use of all available state resources to address the crisis, as per Section 418.017.
The governor's proclamation allows agencies to bypass certain laws and rules about contracting and procurement if they hinder a quick response to the emergency. This declaration facilitates the rapid mobilization of aid and resources needed in this urgent situation.
Additionally, any regulations that could hinder efforts to manage the wildfires can be temporarily suspended with written approval from the Governor's Office. This measure ensures that emergency services can operate without bureaucratic delays during this critical time, aiming to protect lives and properties threatened by the fires.
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay informed about evacuation orders, road closures, and fire safety measures.
