Governor Greg Abbott has announced over $1.3 million in grants to support students pursuing hands-on, in-demand careers by enhancing career and technical education (CTE) programs in seven school districts. Provided by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), these grants aim to strengthen dual credit programs that integrate high school curriculum with college credit, equipping students with the skills needed for high-skilled, well-paid positions after graduation.
As covered by the Governor's recent news release, these funds will give school districts the means to purchase, repair, or upgrade the necessary equipment for students to dive into professions like nursing, welding, and carpentry, "Texas is the economic envy of America thanks to our highly skilled, diverse, and educated workforce," Abbott said, acknowledging the role such programs play in fortifying the Texas economy and supporting the state's workers with more opportunities for growth and enhanced earnings.
TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel emphasized the practical benefits of these grants, providing students with "real-world experiences" that will help them succeed in sectors facing talent shortages. With TWC utilizing the Skills Development Fund, it is clear that initiatives will expand to strengthen dual credit and CTE programs tailored to meet local industry demands for advanced, high-paying skills, according to the Governor's office.
The grants distribution includes Brooks County ISD receiving $218,418 for an HVAC program, while Deweyville ISD and La Pryor ISD each received $220,000 for carpentry and nursing programs, respectively. Panther Creek ISD secured $41,452 for a welding program, and Pawnee ISD received $220,000 for welding as well, with the difference likely due to Panther Creek's smaller student body. Santa Gertrudis ISD received $210,445 for medical training, and Zapata County ISD also secured $220,000 for nursing, completing this educational funding initiative.
