Texas is taking a hard look at its healthcare system, especially the way it trains its workers, as Governor Greg Abbott has unleashed the Healthcare Workforce Task Force's findings on how to beef up the state's medical staff. The report was birthed from concerns of a thinning healthcare workforce that might not be able to keep up with Texas's booming population.

"Training the next generation of healthcare professionals is critical to provide quality medical care and increased access to all Texans," Abbott said, admitting that despite millions poured into job-training grants, the Lone Star State has its work cut out for it. In a statement, Abbott underscored the need to, "bolster our healthcare industry with a highly skilled workforce" to maintain the health of Texans and accelerate the state's economy. This sentiment, brought to public attention in an announcement on the Governor's website, shines a light on the gravity of the situation.

At the helm of the Task Force as Chair was Victoria Ford, who vocalized her gratitude for the role and her commitment to the cause, "I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with the task force and members of the advisory committees and appreciate the time they took to contribute their expertise and very real-world experience to this important project." Task Force strategies included coordinating healthcare workforce planning, expanding healthcare education opportunities, and exploring new ways to adapt to an ever-evolving healthcare landscape, according to the Governor's website.

The meticulous five-month effort from the Task Force involved input from over 70 subject matter experts, 50 stakeholders, and seven state agencies and led to some pretty straightforward recommendations. These include the establishment of a new council to oversee health professions workforce coordination, expansion of pharmacy technicians, funding for apprenticeship programs, and streamlining how nursing students get to their career paths. It also highlighted the need for a deeper dive into community colleges' role in granting four-year degrees for health professionals under specific conditions, something that's already got the educational world talking.

One progressive move from the Task Force recommendations is opening the door to a Gold Ribbon Panel on the Future of Nursing, and creating a clear on-ramp from allied health roles into nursing. The task force didn't shy away from advocating for better program evaluation units to suss out what's working best in healthcare education and training. To sweeten the prospects of a career in healthcare, the Task Force is pushing for ongoing investment in scholarships and loan repayments for healthcare students.
