Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has made a new nomination to the District Court, selecting attorney Cara Krysil for the position, as announced earlier today. In a move to strengthen the state judiciary, Krysil's considerable legal experience is expected to be an asset to the District Court. Her nomination will next be reviewed by the Governor’s Council for confirmation.
"I’m glad to be nominating another incredibly qualified attorney to our District Court," said Governor Healey in the press release. She also highlighted Krysil's "understanding of the law and her passion for justice," expressing her eagerness to work with the Governor’s Council on the nominee's confirmation. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll also spoke in favor of the nominee, stating, "Cara’s strong career as an attorney will serve Massachusetts well," acknowledging the Governor’s Council for their consideration of Krysil.
The District Court in Massachusetts hears a broad scope of cases, including criminal, civil, housing, juvenile, and mental health matters. It has jurisdiction over all misdemeanors, violations of city and town ordinances, and felonies that carry a maximum sentence of up to five years, alongside other specific serious felonies. Civil disputes heard by the Court are generally capped at $50,000 in damages, with small claims cases being limited to $7,000. The Court is represented by 62 courts spread across the Commonwealth.
With a notable legal career, Cara Krysil's resume includes time as an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex and serving as Chief of both the Juvenile Justice Division and the Lowell Regional Superior Court. Following her tenure there, she transitioned to a significant role at the United States Attorney’s Office, tackling cases in the federal court system. Currently, Attorney Krysil is employed as Division Counsel for the DEA's New England Field Division at the Department of Justice, where she's the chief legal advisor on criminal, civil, and administrative law. Her educational credentials include a Juris Doctor from Western New England University School of Law, further bolstering her legal pedigree. Krysil resides in Chelmsford, MA with her family, as reported by Mass.gov.
Once confirmed, Krysil will join 12 other legal professionals nominated by Governor Healey to the District Court. This group reflects the Governor's commitment to bringing diverse and skilled legal experts to the Massachusetts judicial system.
