Hawaii's typical trade winds are temporarily replaced by lighter sea breezes. This shift is expected to bring more showers, especially on the Big Island and Maui. An upper-level low northeast of the islands is drawing in moist air, leading to cloudier skies and localized showers through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service Honolulu forecast.
Windward Big Island and Maui residents should be ready to quickly dodge extra raindrops as this system is expected to "likely enhance overnight precipitation," according to the National Weather Service Honolulu. Locals may need their umbrellas more often in the coming days, but by the weekend, drier weather and stronger trade winds are expected.
A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for waters around Maui County and the Big Island until this evening due to rough seas as easterly winds ease. By Sunday, stronger easterly winds will return, improving conditions for sailors.
Surfers can expect the north-facing shores to see a decrease in surf, but a new pulse is forecasted for the weekend and early next week. The southern and eastern shores will experience a mix of south-southeast and south-southwest swells, with a small southwest swell expected this weekend. While it may not be big waves, there will be enough for a decent session on the surfboard.
