The Hayward Police Department has ruled the death of 47-year-old Tania Afanador as a homicide after initial suspicions following an incident in late September. The detectives have since made an arrest, apprehending 47-year-old Hayward resident Alvaro Sierra as the prime suspect in the case. Last Monday, officers were called to the 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court following reports of a disturbance, as detailed in a City of Hayward press release.
Upon arrival at approximately 10:36 p.m., the officers discovered Afanador unresponsive, and she was quickly pronounced dead on the scene. Alvaro Sierra was also found at the residence, suffering from what seemed to be determined self-inflicted lacerations. Sierra received medical treatment before being discharged and subsequently booked into Santa Rita County Jail on a murder charge following his release from the hospital on Sunday.
According to authorities, Afanador and Sierra were legally married and cohabitated without any children. This incident marks the city's 12th homicide of the year. Chief Bryan Matthews expressed his condolences and highlighted the gravity of domestic violence in a statement obtained by the City of Hayward, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Tania during this incredibly difficult time.” Matthews went on to commend his staff, "The dedication of our entire department, from the detectives to supporting teams, was essential in solving this case."
