In response to Hurricane Milton, Hernando County officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order starting at 8 a.m. today. The order affects high-risk areas west of US 19, including evacuation zones A, B, and C, and residents in manufactured homes. Officials are urging residents to find safe shelter by noon tomorrow.
Hernando County Emergency Management is urging residents in evacuation zones to seek shelter with family or friends in non-evacuation areas quickly. Public shelters should only be used as a last resort. One public shelter will open at 8 a.m. today at Challenger K-8, located at 13400 Elgin Blvd, Spring Hill, FL 34609. This shelter will accommodate special needs clients, the general population, and pets, addressing the needs of families who cannot separate from their animals during the disaster, according to the Hernando County website.
Pet owners heading to shelters have been given a checklist to prepare for their stay. They should bring a properly sized crate, medications, food, and updated vaccinations for their dogs. "Bring your own leash and collar. Ensure your dog is trained to walk on a leash" and "Bring any toys and/or bedding that will make your animal comfortable," a statement obtained by Hernando County. For pets that may be anxious or aggressive, they advise using aids like sheets to cover crates or a muzzle to prevent incidents.
Residents needing help transporting their pets to shelters can contact the Hernando County Public Information Center at 352-754-4083 to arrange pickup, according to the Hernando County's press release. To keep the shelter organized, pet owners are advised to "Bring spray cleaner, paper towels etc., to be able to clean your animal’s crate," ensuring a clean shared space.
