As Hurricane Milton approaches, Hernando County is adjusting its solid waste operations by extending hours for residents and contractors to secure their properties and dispose of storm debris. According to a media release, the West Hernando Convenience Center at 2525 Osowaw Blvd. and the Main Landfill at 14450 Landfill Rd. will be open 24/7 for an indefinite period to meet the community's needs during this critical time.

The county has implemented emergency measures to help mitigate the effects of Hurricane Milton. Residents and contractors can now use the West Hernando Convenience Center and the Main Landfill 24/7, with trailers also allowed at these facilities. Additionally, all storm-related tipping fees will be waived until further notice. However, the East Hernando Convenience Center at 33070 Cortez Blvd. will maintain its regular schedule, open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hernando County officials are taking strong steps to ensure resident safety and preparedness. They offer free, 24/7 disposal for debris. Republic Services will continue garbage collection as scheduled today but will pause by tomorrow to allow Hurricane Milton to pass without disruption.

This coordination reflects a proactive community strategy to minimize chaos after the storm by keeping areas clean and clutter-free, which will aid recovery and cleanup after Milton passes. Residents are encouraged to visit Hernando County's official website for the latest updates on waste operations and other hurricane-related advisories.
