
Tensions escalated into tragedy in Highlands County, Florida when Alberto Rodriguez, 28, was shot and killed by a deputy after he posed a threat by throwing gym weight plates at law enforcement officials. The incident occurred yesterday evening following a disturbance call at a residence catering to individuals battling substance addiction, as reported by the FOX 13 News.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office stated that deputies were summoned around 9:48 p.m. to a commotion involving a man with a knife, upon arrival they attempted to take Alfredo Rodriguez into custody after he was told he had to leave the Hogar R.E.S.A group home but resisted, and tasers proved ineffective, leading to a fatal confrontation, this according to details provided by the WFLA News. In an effort to subdue the situation, the taser was discharged but had no effect on Rodriguez, then dramatic struggle ensued that saw Rodriguez slip from the deputies' wet arm grasps use gym equipment as weapons.
Further details obtained by the Charlotte Observer reveal that Rodriguez, described as standing 6-foot, 5-inches tall, aggressively threw a large weight plate at a deputy and when he brandished a second, one of the three deputies present resorted to using their service weapon resulting in Rodriguez's death after he was later taken to a hospital. The statement from the Sheriff’s Office also confirms that other less lethal methods were attempted before the shooting.
