To recuperate instructional time lost to recent hurricane disruptions, Hillsborough County Public Schools have enacted calendar changes that will particularly affect middle and high school students. These alterations, as reported by WFLA, include an extension of class durations by two minutes in the second semester. Parents should anticipate potential adjustments to bell schedules, with updates to be communicated via email during the week of December 2.
According to ABC Action News, there will be only two early-release days on January 6 and January 13, while all other early-release Mondays will be full school days. This change aims to recover lost instructional time and keep scheduled breaks intact. Additionally, Festival Days, like Florida State Fair Day and Strawberry Festival Day, will have different attendance requirements based on the location of schools in the county.
The school district will also be waiving first-semester exams for the majority of middle and high school students, with exceptions for those who need them for course credit or grade improvement. "The district had already nixed early release days for most of the rest of the first semester, which now runs through mid-January," Tanya Arja, a spokesperson for the district, clarified in a statement obtained by Tampa Bay Times. These measures are part of a suite of strategies to mitigate the academic impact of Hurricane Milton.
