Holyoke Police Officers swiftly responded to reports of a disturbance on High Street in the evening of July 7. The incident escalated into a rolling gunfight between vehicles along Maple Street near Hampden Street, prompting multiple ShotSpotter notifications, according to a report from the Holyoke Police Department. An individual later identified as Orlando Faria-Garcia was injured in the shootout and subsequently treated at Baystate Medical Center.
Using a range of investigative techniques and technological advancements, Detectives James Parnell and Jared Hamel identified three suspects connected not only to the disturbance but also to the shooting and the vehicles involved. This information was obtained through a combination of ballistic and electronic evidence, which played a vital role in reconstructing the events of that morning. A warrant executed on a vehicle linked to the shooting uncovered additional incriminating evidence, including a Sig Sauer P380 pistol loaded with a magazine and ammunition.
In a seemingly related but distinct series of events, Massachusetts State Police arrested Juan Sanchez on July 24, after a spent ammunition casing was discovered in the storage pocket of the driver's side door panel, according to a Facebook post from the Holyoke Police Department. This arrest resulted in additional charges against Sanchez, including firearm possession without a license and attempted murder, among others.
In a related development, after Sanchez's arrest, the investigation turned its attention to Shacolby Merriman and Orlando Faria-Garcia. Merriman, found in Chicopee, MA, was the target of an arrest operation last Friday. The Hampden County Sheriff's Department's Special Response Team, led by Detective David Seidel, executed a high-risk search warrant. According to the Holyoke Police Department, the arrest was made without incident, and Merriman was taken to the Holyoke Police Department for booking.
