A Honduran man faces charges for allegedly making an illegal return to the United States after being ousted. The individual, identified as Osman Cardona-Suazo, aged 30, was indicted on Friday, for his illegal re-entry, a statement from U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans clarified, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Cardona-Suazo's case falls under Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a), which point-blank addresses the re-entry of aliens removed previously from the country. The indictment, as announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office, alleges that after his prior removal on June 22, 2017, Cardona-Suazo managed to swiftly make his way back into the U.S. illegally. His actions now leave him potentially facing up to two years of imprisonment, a year of supervised release, and fines amounting to a maximum of $250,000, in addition to a $100 special assessment fee.
"An indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt," Evans' statement emphasized, as outlined in a recent press release.
In pursuing this case, the commendable effort put forth by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations was lauded by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The duty to prosecute has been handed over to Assistant United States Attorneys Paul J. Hubbell and Spiro Latsis from the General Crimes Unit.
