The Houston SPCA Emergency Response Team is preparing to head toward Tampa, Florida, to provide much-needed disaster relief. As reported by KHOU, the team, carrying essential supplies, is responding to an urgent request for assistance from SPCA Tampa Bay due to an overflow of displaced animals.
The convoy, which includes three Sprinter vans and two vehicles, will be loaded with animal crates destined to transport nearly 100 pets back to Houston. Among the pets making the return journey will be 50 cats, 20 rabbits, and guinea pigs, along with 25 small dogs and puppies, all to be integrated into the Houston SPCA's adoption program, outlined CW39. Departing early today at 4:30 a.m., the 13-member emergency response team faces a 15-hour drive hampered by the potential of flooded roads and downed trees, tirelessly preparing to bring back the pets.
SPCA Tampa Bay is grappling with excess animals following the twin storms and sees the Houston team's aid as a critical measure to ensure the well-being of animals in distress. The burdened Florida shelter, now under the care of the Houston SPCA Emergency Response Team, saw assistance coming their way when overwhelmed by the care needed for countless animals.
Returning Thursday evening around 8 p.m., the animals rescued by the team will find solace in the fostering Houston community.
