Jacksonville's school district is strategizing to optimize its resources, leading to a proposal to merge several schools by the year 2025. As reported by Team Duval, the consolidations would combine G.W. Carver Elementary with Rufus E. Payne Elementary, and merge Hidden Oaks Elementary with Cedar Hills Elementary. The aim is to streamline district operations and cut back on overhead expenses.

Alongside elementary school changes, district leadership intends, for the Bridge to Success Middle and High Schools to come together at Eugene Butler with the existing PRIDE program. The first in a series of consolidation meetings for Bridge to Success took place on October 14, with the next one set for October 21 at Bridge to Success Academy High School. While, G.W. Carver and Rufus E. Payne kicked off their discussions on October 15, with another meeting soon to be announced.

Details of the potential shifts were outlined during community gatherings where stakeholders weighed the implications of the district's proposals. The initial meeting for stakeholders of Hidden Oaks and Cedar Hills will occur this Thursday, October 17, at Cedar Hills Elementary School, providing an opportunity for parents and community members to deliberate the proposed merger.

According to Team Duval, the implications for students appear to be minimal for the upcoming school year. Students enrolled at Rufus E. Payne and Cedar Hills can expect to continue their education unaffected by the consolidation plan. Conversely, students from G.W. Carver and Hidden Oaks are slated to move to their new schools in August 2025, pending approval. Similarly, Bridge to Success students are on track to transition to Eugene Butler during the same timeframe, if the proposal gets a green light. All institutions will operate as usual throughout the 2024-25 academic year.

The district has advised families to remain informed on this issue by monitoring its General Meeting Notices webpage for updates on future consolidation meetings. Although discussions are ongoing, no firm decisions will be made until after a public hearing scheduled for October 29, with the School Board set to make a final determination on November 4.
