To bridge the gap between legal counsel and those who may not otherwise afford it, Jefferson Parish libraries are offering free "Ask-a-Lawyer" sessions for the local community, focusing on civil legal questions and guidance, as part of the Lawyers in Libraries program. This initiative sees local attorneys volunteering their expertise in various library locations throughout Jefferson Parish, and it represents a partnership between the Louisiana State Bar Association, the State Library of Louisiana, and the Louisiana Library Association.
Patrons in need of legal advice have access to volunteer attorneys like Temia Griffin and Brittany Carnes Melacon, embarking upon the road of legal clarity in two-hour increments, with times varying by location; Gretna Library will host sessions from 1 to 3 p.m. today with Griffin and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, with Melacon, according to information obtained by WDSU. The sessions are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, without the need for prior registration, which was detailed in a report from WGNO.
Given that nearly 20 percent of Louisiana's population lives below the federal poverty line, as highlighted by WDSU, these sessions aim to meet a critical need for legal support amongst residents who face economic challenges. The "Ask-a-Lawyer" program endeavours to fill the gap for many who cannot afford an attorney and may not live within a reasonable distance of a free legal aid office.
The list of participating attorneys and library locations is extensive; lawyers such as Maurice Hebert and Peter Meisner will be offering advice at the River Ridge Library, with Hebert available from 10 a.m. to noon today and Meisner from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, the services extend into the evenings for those who might be at the behest of the daytime's demands, such lawyer Mariarenee Contreras will be at the East Bank Regional Library from 5 to 7 p.m. today and again at the Old Metairie Library at the same time the previous day, in a roster of volunteers detailed by NOLA.com.
