Holding onto those old pills? It's time to let them go safely. The DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will commence this Saturday, Oct. 26, an opportunity for folks to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The goal is to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. Clean out your medicine cabinets and head over to Market District (Giant Eagle) at 650 N. State St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where the Westerville Division of Police will be ready to help dispose of your medications responsibly.
Westerville offers an alternative drop-off point if you can't make the date. Unused prescriptions can be dropped off in a specially marked receptacle in the 229 Huber Village Blvd lobby. Check the City of Westerville's Medication Disposal web page to verify what items are accepted for disposal. This simple move could significantly impact community safety, reducing risks associated with improper medicine use and disposal.
The DEA has reported that the Take Back initiative has been an overwhelming success in previous years, collecting tons of pharmaceuticals and bridging gaps in awareness about the dangers of medication misuse. Not only does this event remove the potential for harm from within homes, but it also helps to protect our waterways and environment from contamination that can occur when drugs are flushed or thrown away.
