A 17-year-old Mansfield boy is dead and a 16-year-old faces a murder charge after a violent early-morning confrontation inside a home on Lexington Ontario Road turned into a fatal stabbing. Deputies responding to the scene around 12:29 a.m. found the teen suffering from multiple stab wounds before he later died from his injuries.
The Richland County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Brodie Raedyn Gibson, a 16-year-old Mansfield resident, according to a release cited by Cleveland 19 News. Deputies responded to the report of a stabbing at 1040 Lexington Ontario Road in Mansfield, where first responders began life-saving measures before the Springfield Township Fire Department transported the boy to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. The victim was later identified by authorities as Elias Ali Uzunoff of Mansfield, according to Ashland County Pictures, which reported that first responders found Uzunoff unresponsive in the front yard of the home before he died at the hospital.
An incident report cited by the outlet indicated the fatal encounter was rooted in a romantic entanglement. Gibson was reportedly the former boyfriend of a teenage girl living at the home, while Uzunoff was said to be her current boyfriend. The same report noted that a resident of the home was awakened when Gibson called asking to be let in, claiming he was having car trouble, and was turned away at the front door.
Basement Entry Preceded the Fatal Fight
After being refused entry, Gibson allegedly gained unauthorized access to the home through the basement, according to the incident report described by Ashland County Pictures. A physical confrontation then broke out inside the residence before spilling into the front yard, where Uzunoff was ultimately found. Deputies located the suspect and witnesses at the scene, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted the sheriff's office during the response.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Crime Scene Unit also assisted at the scene, processing evidence in heavy rain and executing a search warrant at the home. Investigators collected cellphones and other physical evidence, and the same report noted that blood was recovered from the glass front door, hallway, and kitchen areas. Search efforts for the knife used in the attack were still ongoing, per the report.
Self-Defense Claim Meets Forensic Doubt
Gibson was treated for a cut to his hand and repeatedly told deputies he acted in self-defense, according to the incident report. However, an investigating deputy observed that the cut appeared consistent with a hand slipping down a knife blade onto its edge rather than a defensive wound, the outlet reported. Gibson was evaluated at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital before being fingerprinted, photographed, and booked into the Richland County Juvenile Detention Center, where he remains held.
Gibson was taken into custody following consultation with the Richland County Prosecutor's Office and has been charged with murder, per the sheriff's office. Because Gibson is 16, Ohio's mandatory bindover statute could come into play. Under Ohio Revised Code § 2152.12(A)(1)(a)(i), 16- or 17-year-olds charged with murder must be transferred from juvenile court to adult criminal court once a juvenile judge finds probable cause, removing judicial discretion in category-one offenses like murder.

The stabbing adds to a string of violent incidents in Mansfield this year. In May, Hoodline reported on a separate fatal stabbing on Morgan Road after a fight between two women escalated behind a residence, leading to murder charges for a 43-year-old suspect. Just weeks before Uzunoff's death, a week-long METRICH Enforcement Unit operation in Mansfield led to 24 people facing felony charges and search warrants executed at four residential locations across the city, targeting drug trafficking and illegal weapons.
FBI crime figures covering 2019 through 2023 show Mansfield's average violent crime rate at 243.6 per 100,000 residents, more than double the national average of 106.2 per 100,000, according to Crime Explorer. In December 2025, another Richland County stabbing case triggered soft lockdowns at nearby schools as authorities searched for suspect Zachary Michael Zeiter, who was later taken into custody after attempting to return home.
Key questions remain unresolved as the investigation continues. Investigators have not said whether the knife used in the stabbing has been recovered, and the Richland County Prosecutor's Office has not detailed how or when formal bindover proceedings against Gibson will move forward. It is also unclear how the court will weigh Gibson's self-defense claim against the forensic evidence collected at the scene.
