The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) introduced a Gun Amnesty Program, giving individuals an opportunity to dispose of unwanted firearms in an anonymous and protected manner. The program, aimed at reducing incidents of firearm-related mischief, partners with local faith-based agencies to offer six safe drop-off points across Kalamazoo, WOODTV.com reports.
Residents are encouraged to wrap or bag firearms prior to setting an appointment with one of these locations, chief David Boysen noted the initiative's goal to make the community safer by lowering the number of guns potentially falling into the wrong hands, signaling a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community, this was mirrored in the sentiments expressed by Pastor Gregory Jennings of Progressive Deliverance Ministries church, according to wkzo, who pointed out the program's value in alleviating worries for those unsure of how to handle found firearms.
Executing the hand-off, participants will place the firearm inside a designated case which is then locked by a staff member, ensuing a KDPS officer arrives to collect the secure box, in a statement obtained by wkzo, Chief Boysen describes the program as a demonstrative act of community and law enforcement collaboration in the fight against gun violence. Maintaining the anonymous nature of the process, no personal details are solicited from the individuals surrendering firearms, which are later transported to KDPS for official documentation and safe disposal.
Alongside Progressive Deliverance Ministries, the drop-off locations include Word Harvest Ministries, Allen Chapel AME Church, Holy Temple COGIC, Bethany Reformed Church, and Seasons of Change Church, all of which provide residents with a secure space to lay down arms without judgment or penalty, an instructional video and further details on the Gun Amnesty Program can be located on the KDPS's official website as per information provided by WWMT.
