Kingsport Parks and Recreation is teaming up with Milligan University Women’s Basketball for an experience that promises to be a slam dunk for aspiring athletes with disabilities. The A.S.P.I.R.E. Challenger League Basketball program, scheduled for this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., offers a chance to thoroughly learn how to play basketball. The best part? It's free and open to all ages.
The program focuses on Adaptive: Sports, Recreation, and Inclusive Recreation Experiences (A.S.P.I.R.E.) and aims to provide an environment of fair and equal competition. Participants can expect to refine their skills with the basketball, learning to more naturally dribble, shoot, and handle the ball, courtesy of Milligan University's team players who are volunteering for the event.
"Milligan University has done this program for several years and we greatly appreciate them coming over and working with our ASPIRE players," stated Kingsport Parks and Recreation Program Administrator Renee Ensor on the Kingsport Parks and Recreation website. "The players always make sure the program is just a fun day of basketball."
While walk-ins are welcome on the day of the event, officials are encouraging interested parties to register ahead of time. This isn’t just to keep a headcount, but also to help organizers better prepare to accommodate all participants. To do so simplifies the process of estimating attendance numbers, and you can register at Kingsport Parks and Recreation's official website.
For those looking to participate or volunteer in the program, additional details and registration information can be found by visiting the Kingsport Parks and Recreation website. So lace up your sneakers, grab a basketball, and get ready to hit the court for a day of accessible athletic fun and learning!
