Drivers in the Knoxville area may want to allow for some extra time during their morning commute today. The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory that remains in effect until 10 AM EDT. Motorists should expect visibility of one-quarter mile or less in dense fog. This warning encompasses parts of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia.
The advisory clearly states that "Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog" will make for challenging driving conditions. The fog is expected to disperse by mid-morning, making way for clear skies and a mostly sunny day with an anticipated high near 83. The conditions tonight are projected to be mostly cloudy, coupled with a low around 66 and a calm wind, hinting at the possibility of more patchy fog come morning, as detailed by the National Weather Service.
For Friday, the forecast includes a mild 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after the afternoon, with early patchy fog before giving way to another mostly sunny day with highs projected at around 82 degrees. As for the weekend, the outlook through Sunday shows sunny periods with highs in the low to mid-80s, calm winds, and clear nights with lows in the low 60s.
The NWS cautions that "Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous, allow extra time for the morning commute." Such conditions require drivers to slow down, use headlights, and keep a safe following distance from other vehicles. With the fog expected to fade towards the latter part of the morning, the advisory aims to ensure the safety of the morning rush by promoting awareness and recommending caution.
