A tragic event occurred this past Monday when 33-year-old Dustin Pilkington was fatally struck by a train in Knoxville, as confirmed by the Knoxville Police Department (KPD). The incident occurred near E. Inskip Drive and Morton Place Way at around 5:30 p.m., WVLT reported.
A detailed statement from KPD relayed that the train, a Norfolk Southern locomotive heading south, encountered Pilkington on the tracks as the operator attempted to stop the train, blowing the horn, initiating the brakes but was unable to prevent the collision with sufficient time to spare, according to a release detailed by WATE.
After the occurrence, the affected area along E. Inskip Drive was temporarily closed between Central Avenue Pike and Coster Road to facilitate the investigation by detectives, a process that is still ongoing. Following the incident, Pilkington's body was moved to the Regional Forensic Center for examination and identification, as was mentioned in both police statements and media coverage.
Despite the steps taken by the train operators who saw Pilkington and the use of the train's horn and brake system, they could not halt the train before the tragic impact. This adds to the narrative of the events as understood at this time, although the investigation into the accident remains active. Updates will be provided as they're made available by authorities.
