The city of Kyle is stepping up its infrastructure game as it confronts the realities of a population that has surged past the 60,000 mark. In efforts to address the growing traffic and safety concerns, the city commenced construction on extending Marketplace Avenue, a part of a nearly $300 million bond project approved by voters to tackle rising congestion. The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, was the first step in a multi-phase plan aiming to reshape the city's transportation landscape. According to a report by KVUE, this extension of Marketplace Avenue is budgeted at $11.4 million and spans just over a half-mile.
Moving forward with the project is not merely about convenience but also critical for ensuring efficient response times for emergencies within the growing city. "Our public safety building is located 300 yards due south of me. This will be a critical pathway for police responders to get into some the most congested business areas of our community so we can provide emergency services," Police Chief Jeff Barnett told KVUE. The importance of this project is echoed in the community, with residents like Kelly Riggs expressing enthusiasm for the anticipated ease in mobility, "We definitely need to get places quicker because it’s backed up everywhere," Riggs mentioned to KVUE.
The Marketplace Avenue venture signifies the commencement of several transportation improvements slated for Kyle. In total, 13 road segments are to be upgraded, with three major projects breaking ground next year and seven more scheduled for 2026, followed by two additional in 2027. "That makes a lot of traffic on these major thoroughfares. This is an important project to get started,” Mayor Travis Mitchell said aligning with the city's focus on transportation development, according to a KXAN report.
The bond project not only figures to help alleviate traffic woes but also aims to innovate in terms of safety for all travelers within Kyle. As part of the Marketplace Avenue extension, the city’s Vybe trail, which is a 12-foot wide multi-modal path will be extended to travel underneath FM 1626. This design is meant to allow pedestrians to cross the hectic 8-lane roadway securely. Mayor Mitchell outlined a future where people could walk from downtown to the public safety center without brush with vehicular traffic, as told to KXAN. Marketplace Avenue is anticipated to reach completion within six months, marking a swift step towards adapting to Kyle's rapid growth.
