Yesterday in a Lake County courtroom, Ian Anselmo, 26, was handed a life sentence for the murder of his pregnant stepmother, Sue Ellen Anselmo, dating back to 2019. Bill Gladson, Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney, expressed the gravity of the situation, "Today, we hold accountable a defendant who chose to take the life of his pregnant stepmother in 2019. This tragic case is a sobering reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of protecting the vulnerable," according to the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office. Sentenced by Judge Brian Welke, there was a clear message sent about the severity of Anselmo's actions.
Anselmo's conviction comes after a harrowing event at Greenwood Cemetery on March 13, 2019, where he strangled his stepmother. Law enforcement, responding to a 9-1-1 call, found Sue with a cord around her neck and Ian Anselmo at the scene. After an unsuccessful attempt to save her, Sue died five days later due to her injuries.
Despite the defense attorney's effort to argue for an insanity defense, unveiled in a document on September 9, 2020, a Lake County jury determined Anselmo sane during the attack in April this year. They ruled that Anselmo was cognizant of his actions, thus convicting him of Second-Degree Murder and Killing an Unborn Child by Injury to the Mother.
Assistant State Attorneys Nicholas Camuccio and Thomas Wieczorek successfully prosecuted the case, which hinged on Anselmo's state of mind during the crime. According to the evidence presented at trial, and testimony from both sides, jurors reached a conclusion that has now led Anselmo to face a lifetime behind bars. In a case marked by the tragic loss of two lives, law and order have spoken, but, the question of what justice can offer to those bereft remains unanswered.
