The Las Vegas Aces are making changes in their front office by parting ways with General Manager Natalie Williams after a semifinal season that fell short of expectations. Williams helped build the team that won WNBA Championships in 2022 and 2023. Her contract was not renewed as part of a “restructuring” effort, according to News 3.
The dismissal occurred amid various issues, including a lawsuit from former Aces player Dearica Hamby, who claims discrimination and retaliation due to her pregnancy. The Aces organization and the WNBA recently filed motions to dismiss the lawsuit. The league is investigating potential salary-cap violations involving the team after reports that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority offered $100,000 annual sponsorships to players, as reported by Sportsnet.
Nikki Fargas, the Aces' President, expressed gratitude for Williams’ contributions, saying, "We are incredibly grateful for Natalie’s invaluable efforts in helping build the Aces into the premier franchise in the WNBA," as stated by News 3. Williams leaves a strong legacy as a four-time All-Star and Olympic gold medalist, along with achievements from her time as an executive with the Aces.
The future GM of the Aces will inherit a strong team, including reigning MVP A’ja Wilson, but will need to address Kelsey Plum's pending free agency. The team may also face challenges from the WNBA's upcoming expansion draft. The Aces aimed for a third straight title, not achieved since the Houston Comets, but were eliminated by the New York Liberty in this year's knockout round. Former GM Williams stated, "It has been a joy and honour to serve as General Manager of the Las Vegas Aces." She expressed gratitude to team owner Mark Davis and looked forward to the growth of women's basketball, as mentioned by Sportsnet.
