A longwave trough from the north is bringing a new weather pattern to Las Vegas. After a cold front passed around 1 AM PDT, wind gusts reached 40 to 50 mph. The National Weather Service reports, "Wind speeds will gradually decrease through the weekend and temperatures will gradually moderate heading into the next work week as ridging sets up over the region."
Showers and possible mountain snow have hit the eastern areas due to the system's moisture, creating unusual scenes for Las Vegas residents. As the low-pressure center moves into central Arizona, these weather changes will continue throughout the day.
After bundling up for an unexpected cold spell, Las Vegans can look forward to warmer weather soon. "Our first taste of fall won't last long as strong high pressure promises to rebuild across much of the Western US next week," the National Weather Service states. Residents can expect to shed layers as temperatures rise above seasonal averages, bringing light winds and mostly clear skies to the region.
Travelers at Harry Reid and other local airports will face northwesterly wind gusts that should lessen by evening. According to the National Weather Service, pilots and travelers should expect cloud bases above 10,000 feet. Spotters in the area are encouraged to report any significant changes as the weather front moves through.
