In a bid to address the dearth of affordable housing, the City of Lewisville is tapping into the creative energy of its residents with a unique Backyard Cottage Design Competition. The initiative, backed by a $15,000 grant from AARP, aims to stir public interest and involvement in affordable housing by challenging locals to think outside the traditional housing box. As the cost of living soars, Lewisville is stepping up by fostering innovative solutions through this communal contest.
According to the City of Lewisville, the competition promises to be inclusive, offering participants from various age brackets a chance at winning accolades - ranging from young minds in elementary school to seasoned professionals over 55 and includes categories like Older adult, Professional, Adult, High School/Middle School, Elementary School, and ones emphasizing Creative, Sustainable, and Accessible design ideas. The city's approach is a conscious one, aimed at drawing designs that reflect the diverse phases of life, and the submission process runs through to the witching hour of Halloween, October 31.
Those eager to leave their mark on Lewisville's landscape can submit their backyard cottage concepts through the provided link and join a larger dialogue about habitation. Winners, who will come to light in December, will have the honor of being recognized by the Mayor and City Council – a gesture underscoring the community significance of this challenge.
The contest categories have been crafted with the city's "Lewisville Big Moves" in mind and touch upon the varying life stages of residents. The city promises a purse of $250 to $2,000 for the most innovative designs, which not only entail an incentive but also a commendation of civic contribution.
